How to Share Your Interests To Connect with Your Target Audience in Your Website Copy

Real talk: how many of us have something like "I love vanilla lattes" or "I have 3 dogs and a cat" on your website (no judgement— truly)?!

As a copywriter, I know how important it is to share little snippets of relatable information about you, the human behind the brand. People want to buy from people, and the easiest way to connect with other people? Connecting through your shared interests, values, beliefs, and lifestyle.

But here’s the thing: you need to set up your personal “fun facts” on your website in a way that makes sense.

Including a “fun fact” section on your About page with random facts like your coffee order, your dog’s name and breed, and how many kids you have… it’s not exactly the most inspiring.

The trick? Weave your “fun fact” section into your About page, so it feels organic and actually fun, not forced.

Not sure how to do that? Keep reading and you’ll have a new, cohesive yet engaging fun fact section in no time!

KEEP YOUR FUN FACTS SECTION ON YOUR ABOUT PAGE ON BRAND BY RELATING EVERYTHING BACK TO YOUR BUSINESS

If you have a "fun fact" section on your about page, here's my best tip to make it on-brand:

Relate EVERYTHING back to your business 👏🏻

How can you make your fun facts say something about you AND your business? Because let’s be real: people are on your website to learn about your business. Learning about YOU is the cherry on top. So combine them both for a winning combination!

As a copywriter, here’s how I incorporate my clients’ personal interests and “fun facts” into their website About page:

OPTION 1: SPRINKLE YOUR PERSONAL INTERESTS THROUGHOUT YOUR WEBSITE COPY

  • Add in personal hobbies/interests to your website copy to show empathy with your audience: for example, if you’re a bookkeeper who loves reading:

“You’d rather be catching up on your to-be-read list than your endless bookkeeping? SAME.”

Ideally, this should match up with your audience’s interests as well. It probably wouldn’t hit the same if you said something like…

“You’d rather be peeling beets to make borscht soup than catching up on your endless bookkeeping? SAME.”

(That’s probably only relatable if you’re a bookkeeper to Dwight Schrute or cooking experts. In that case, go for it)

  • Add in quips that show off your personality:

For example, here’s the header on my About page right now:

“Feel-good website copywriting to make your audience obsessed with your brand. Like, Mariah-Carey-Write-A-Song-Level-Obsessed. Or Influencer-”I can’t live without this $27 sponge”-obsessed”.

From that, you can probably guess that I enjoy throwback 2000s music and have a love-hate relationship with influencers. But even if you don’t read that far into it, you can understand me just a little better. It’s a little fun, a little sassy, and not so subtle (hey, same!).

OPTION 2: ADD A “FUN FACTS” SECTION TO YOUR ABOUT PAGE

Again, bring everything back to your business! How can you relate your fun facts back to your business?

Here’s some examples for you:

WHEN YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOUR PETS:

Something you’ll always find at my desk: my dachshund Max, who’s usually snuggled up on my lap

WHEN YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOUR HOBBIES:

When I’m not at my desk, you’ll find me: exploring secondhand bookstores or taking a spin class

WHEN YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOUR COFFEE ORDER:

Go-to drink while I’m designing your website: chai latte with a blonde espresso shot

See? Two super easy and effective ways to add more you to your site, without your audience feeling like they’re reading random facts.

Try these out on your About page, and thank me later!
